Panosteitis

Panosteitis

This condition has been included here as, although self limiting and not usually serious, it still causes much worry to the pet owner.

It is associated with excess bone production in large breeds, causing pain in the long bones and lameness. It usually occurs in growing dogs from 5-12 months. It is more common in males.

The pain can be severe and the animal may be depressed. It often shifts from one leg to another and may last for periods of two or three weeks to several months.

Treatment consists of anti inflammatory drugs in severe cases and rest during periods of lameness. Vitamin C has been found to be beneficial in some individuals. Most dogs will grow out of the condition by 20 months.
